i don’t believe you should force yourself to like something. but saying joy division sucks because you can’t manage to seems quite idiotic. joy division is a hard band to get into, i consider myself a fan and i dislike around 15 songs, but still man, show some fucking respect. its not just the cure you’d be missing out on, its basically all of the music worth listening to after 1980.
Did you watch “Control”? I don’t think you can pass judgement on them until you watch it. Kendra and I own it and can let you borrow it. Did you watch the doc titled “Joy Division”? I think they will give you a much better idea of the band than youtube videos. If you still need a little help, try listening to newer bands covering Joy Division songs in an effort to appreciate the songs. Two that come to mind of the top of my head are The Killer’s version of “Shadowplay” and Nine Inch Nails version of “Dead Souls”. In out world of Autotune corrected vocals, I welcome Ian Curtis’ “mistakes”. They can be beautiful and revealing. Remember how so much emotion and passion was communicated during Nirvana’s Unplugged performance. We don’t get enough of that anymore. Next thing I know you’re going to say that you don’t like The Smiths.
I do appreciate what Joy Division did for music; it’s obvious they were a huge influence. It’s just that the hair on the back of my neck gets all out of kilter whenever I hear an off-key note. I’d love to watch the documentary, though.
Believe it or not, I’m partial to solo Morrissey than the Smiths.
They don’t suck. You just haven’t had the necessary experiences needed to relate to their music. That’s a “good” thing, though. Ignorance is bliss. I mean that in the least offensive way possible. Think about it.
